Gus J. Solomon was born in Portland, Oregon on August 29, 1906. He received his law degree from Stanford University and worked in private practice until his appointment to the federal bench by President Harry S. Truman in 1950. Recipient of many honors and awards over his career, he was best known as a civil rights advocate. He died in Portland at the age of eighty.
