Schmitz, Leonhard, 1807-1890
Variant namesLeonhard Schmitz was a German scholar, author, and educator, specializing in history. He became a naturalized British citizen, and translated English works into German and German works into English, introducing much German scholarship to Great Britain. His landmark translation of Niebuhr's lectures on the History of Rome was highly praised. In later years he tutored many famous pupils, including the Prince of Wales, and wrote extensively for encyclopedias.
