U.S. Senator (1837-1843) from Hallowell, Me.; practiced law in Augusta and was member of Maine Legislature from 1812-1829 and again from 1832-1848; elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate from March 4, 1837 to Feb. 15, 1843, during which time he served as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Naval Affairs; also was manager of Kennebec and Portland Railroad for 12 years.
