California artist specializing in paintings of Pomo Indian children.

Born near Ukiah in Potter Valley, Calif., Grace Carpenter studied at the Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco under Virgil Williams. In 1890 she married John W.N. Hudson, the Pacific coast ethnologist for the Field Museum and a student of the language and art of the Pomo Indians. In addition to her depictions of the Pomo Indians, Grace Hudson also painted Hawaiian children (1901) and Pawnee Indians in Oklahoma (1904). She lived and worked in Ukiah until her death in 1937.
