Viceroy of Brazil from 1769 to 1779, whose long and eventful administration coincided with a period of political and economic crisis in Brazil.

Lavradio, a protegé of the Portuguese ruler, the Marquis de Pombal, served briefly as Captain-general of Bahia (1768-1769) before being promoted to the position of Viceroy of Brazil. During his years in office, he strengthened Brazil's defenses in the war with Spain over disputed (and ultimately lost) territories, modernized the management of imperial finances, and sought additional sources of income by developing new agricultural and extractive industries.
