Cleveland, Francis G. (Francis Grover), 1903-
Variant namesBorn on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey, Grover Cleveland was the twenty-second (1885-1889) and twenty-fourth (1893-1897) President of the United States, the only president to leave the White House and return for a second term. In June 1886, Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom, making him, too, the only president to marry while serving in the White House. He died in Princeton, New Jersey on June 24, 1908. While in office, Grover Cleveland vigorously pursued a policy that would prevent political favors to any special interest group. President Cleveland angered railroad industry leaders by ordering an investigation of western lands they held by government grant. He also called for the reduction of high productive tariffs in order to facilitate the flow of foreign goods into the United States.
