Lloyd J. Reynolds was born in 1902. He was a professor of art at Reed College, Portland, Oregon, and a member of the faculty there from 1929 to his retirement in 1969. Hired as an instructor in English and creative writing, then art history, he taught a graphic arts workshop and co-founded the Champoeg Press at the college, studied calligraphy on his own, corresponded with the great calligraphers of the day, and became a well-known and very popular teacher of calligraphy (1949 on) and his broad beliefs in philosophy, history, and the power of each individual, both at Reed and in the larger community. He was credited with the introduction of calligraphy to the American West and had many dedicated students who became calligraphers and graphic designers. He continued to teach up until his death in 1978. He had two children, John and Richard, with his wife Virginia (Bliss) and, after her death in 1970, married Judith (Reynders) in 1975.
