John Leonard Hines was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, in 1891 and was commissioned as second lieutenant of Infantry in 1891. He served in the Spanish-American War both in Cuba and in the Philippines. For a decade, he served as Chief Quartermaster (CQ) at various stations and was then assigned to the Adjutant General's (AG) Department (Dept.). He was AG of the Punitive Expedition in Mexico in 1916 and later, was Chief of Staff (CofS) of the expedition. During WWI, Hines rose to the rank of major general, finally commanding III (3rd) Army Corps. Following WWI, Hines was appointed as the Deputy CofS and later, CofS of the U.S. Army.

John Leonard Hines (b. May 21, 1868, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia-d. Oct. 13, 1968, Washington, D.C.), General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1891 and served in Cuba during the Spanish-American War and later in the Philippines and on the Mexican border. During World War I, he commanded the 1st Brigade and the 4th Division and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for action in France (1918). He later served as Army Chief of Staff and as commanding general of the Department of the Philippines. General Hines retired in 1932 and died after reaching his 100th birthday.
