The British painter Frederick Goodall belonged to a large family of artists. A trip to Egypt in 1858-1859 with the German painter Carl Haag brought a dramatic change in his subjects and technique. He was elected full Academician in 1863. The increasing success of his oriental scenes and types allowed Goodall in 1876 to build a residence in Harrow Weald designed by architect Norman Shaw. Later, as his popularity declined, the artist sold his mansion in 1888, and in 1902 was declared bankrupt.
