Roland Frederick Smith; born April 8, 1917 in Boston; raised in Milton, Mass.; belonged to the Congregational Christian Church; graduate of Oberlin College, 1939; M.A., University of Pennsylvania; Ph.D. in mathematics, Syracuse University, 1955; taught mathematics at several colleges and universities, including Earlham College; was a conscientious objector during World War II, serving in Civilian Public Service (CPS), including work as an attendant at mental hospitals; married 1) Ada Mary Johnson (1920-1945) and 2) Margaret Johnson; member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the War Resisters League; was a member of Albany Friends Meeting; died April 21, 1992.
