Phillip Ayres, poet, translator of romances, born at Cottingham in 1638, educated at Westminster School and St. John's College, Oxford; became tutor, and later steward, in the family of the Drakes of "Shardelois,' Amercham, Co. Bucks, and lived with the family until his death in 1712.
