John Thadeus Delane was born on 11 October 1817 in London. He was educated at King's College, London, and at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, and was called to the bar in 1847. He joined the staff of The Times, succeeding Thomas Barnes as editor in 1841. Under his editorship, The Times, had a tendency to sympathize with the Liberal movements of the day. Retiring due to ill health in 1877, he died on 22 November 1879 at Ascot Heath House in Berkshire.
