English physicist who pioneered the field of thermionics; also known for his work on photoelectricity, spectroscopy, ultraviolet and x-ray radiation, the electron theory, and quantum theory. Awarded the 1928 Nobel Prize for physics for his work in thermionics and for his discovery of Richardson's Law.
