First colonial commandant in W.A., arriving in 1829 in command of a detachment of the 63rd Regiment assigned to protect the newly established Swan River settlement. In 1835, published the first account of the colony "The state and position of Western Australia". In 1836, sent back to W.A. with the rank of major to command the local garrison. From Feb. 1847 - Aug. 1848, he was Governor of the Colony.
