Cowper was an English poet and lyricist who wrote several hymns including "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," prompted in part by his relationship with John Newton, a British evangelical minister. Cowper wrote several long poems of note, "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" and the "Castaway."
