By 1966 Gyngell was Chief Executive Officer of Channel Nine and went on to establish himself as a successful film and TV producer. He created the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal, the forerunner of the Broadcasting Authority, and was its first Chairman. He was credited with making the English Breakfast TV station, TV-AM a commercial and creative success story. He established SBS, the Special Broadcasting Service, in 1980 and was their inaugural Chief Executive, before returning to the Nine Network.
