Born in Kentucky and moved to Illinois where he practiced law in Edwardsville, served in the Illinois House of Representatives, Speaker of the House, Attorney General, U.S. Senator and judge of the Illinois Supreme Court. Moved to Alton in 1837, went into the real estate business and founded the town of Elsah, Illinois, where he eventually died.
