Miles Franklin was born in 1879, a fifth-generation Australian, and grew up on grazing properties run by her family in the Monaro region of New South Wales. At nineteen, she wrote 'My Brilliant Career', an important study of the opportunities and expectations faced by young Australian women in the 1890s. She left Australia in 1906, travelling first to America and then to England. During the 1920s in England, she wrote pseudonymously a series of six well-received novels. In 1932 Franklin returned to Australia permanently, continuing her important contributions to the promotion and development of Australian literature. She died in 1954.

Born in Australia, lived in U.S.A., 1906-1917, where she became an active member of the National Women's Trade Union League of America. She edited its publication, Life and Labor, 1913, 1915-1916, and held various honorary positions.

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was born on 14 October 1879 at Talbingo, N.S.W. She lived for many years in the U.S.A. and England before settling permanently in Australia in 1933. Several novels were published under her pseudonym of "Brent of Bin Bin". Old Blastus of Bandicoot was written in her own name.

A satire, Pioneers on Parade (1939), was written in collaboration with Dymphna Cusack, and a literary biography, Joseph Furphy, the Legend of a Man and his Book (1944), was written with Kate Baker.
