Known nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of nursing.Katharine Jane Densford Dreves was born on December 7, 1890 in Crothersville, Indiana. She received her bachelor's degree in Latin and history from Miami University (OH) in 1914, and a master's degree in history from the University of Chicago in 1915. With the onset of World War I, Densford looked to become a nurse and earned a diploma in graduate nursing from the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing and Health in 1920. From 1922-1925 an instructor of tuberculosis nursing and public health nursing at the University of Cincinnati. In 1925 Densford moved to Chicago to be the Assistant Dean of the Illinois Training School for Nurses and Assistant Director of Nursing Service at Cook County Hospital.She became a professor and director of the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota in 1930. Densford was a involved in various professional nursing associations including, the American Nurses' Association (ANA), Sigma Theta Tau, Minnesota League of Nursing Education, Alpha Tau Delta, Minnesota Nurses Association, Minnesota Nursing Council for War Service, and the International Council of Nurses (ICN). She was frequently requested for speeches and presentations, giving over 140 in one calendar year. In addition to her professional service and teaching, Densford was a prolific writer, authoring almost 100 books and articles during her career. She retired from the University in 1959 and subsequently married Carl A. Dreves of St. Paul, Minnesota. She died on September 29, 1978.
