John J. Shillinglaw was author of the following works: A narrative of Arctic discovery, from the earliest period to the present time : with the details of the measures adopted by Her Majesty's government for the relief of the expedition under Sir John Franklin. London : W. Shoberl, 1850; The Australian shipmaster's guide : A handbook of mercantile and maritime information, relating to merchant ships and seamen in Victoria; and Historical records of Port Phillip: The first annals of the colony of Victoria. He was the Honorary Secretary of the Caledonian Society of Victoria between 1861 and 1864.
