Draper Laurence Kauffman was born August 4, 1911, in San Diego, California. He received his commission as Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve then transferred to the U.S. Navy as a commander in 1946. He advanced through grades to the rank of rear admiral in 1961, then served as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy from 1965 to 1968. Kauffman died on August 18, 1979.
