Universalist minister Augusta Jane Chapin was born in Lakeville, N.Y., the oldest of seven children of Almon Morris and Jane (Pease) Chapin. She attended Olivet College in Olivet, Mich., and Michigan Female College; during her college years she became interested in religious thought and was drawn to the Universalist belief that all persons will be saved. She taught school in Lansing and Lyons, Mich., and in May 1859 preached her first sermon in Portland, Mich., and became an itinerant preacher. A popular preacher and lecturer, Chapin was a charter member of Sorosis and the Association for the Advancement of Women. For more biographical information, see Notable American Women, 1607-1950.
