William Wetmore Story was born in Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1840, left the United States in 1847 and spent the rest of his life in Rome. There he began his career as a sculptor, working mostly in marble.

American expatriate William Wetmore Story had talent and success in diverse pursuits. After graduating from Harvard, he practised law in Boston, while nurturing an interest in the arts. He gradually moved to Rome, and earned a reputation as a sculptor. He also wrote extensively, and published poetry, a novel, and essays on a variety of topics, including art and law. He was well-known among his peers, and he and his wife were at the center of an English-speaking community of artists in Italy. His numerous friends included Hawthorne, Thackeray, and Robert Browning.
