John Irwin Hutchinson, born on 12 April 1867 in Bangor, Maine, studied mathematics at Bates College and Clark University, and received his PhD. from the University of Chicago. Most of his teaching career was spent at Cornell University, where he began as an instructor in mathematics in 1894, served as an assistant professor from 1903 until 1910, and held a full professorship from 1910 until his death on 1 December 1935.
