American author, born 1825 in Charleston, S.C., who published prose and poetry; her writings included novels featuring young women rising above poverty through education and persistence; first published in 1848, she produced two novels under the pen name Caroline Thomas before using her real name; spent her childhood in New York City, N.Y., and then Rutland, Vermont; wife of Seneca Dorr (1820-1884); daughter of William Young Ripley (1797-1875) and Zulma Caroline Thomas Ripley (1801-1826)
