A native of Somerset County Pennsylvania, John Kinkead was born on December 10, 1826. He came to Carson City on 1859 to establish a branch of his father-in-law's mercantile firm. He served as territorial treasurer in Nevada before becoming Nevada's third governor. In 1884 He was appointed governor of Alaska Territory. One year later he returned to Carson City where he lived until his death on August 15, 1904.
