A Swiss chemist trained at Zürich, came at Rutherford's invitation to the Cavendish Laboratory in 1936; he was involved in the 'Tube Alloys' project on uranium and plutonium and was a member of the British Mission at Los Alamos from early 1944, working in Fermi's Advanced Development Division. After the war he joined the newly-established Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, first as head of the Chemistry Division, then as head of the Nuclear Physics Division from l948 until his retirement in l966.
