Henry Inman (1801-1846), son of William and Sarah Inman, was born in Utica, N.Y. After an apprenticeship with the portrait painter, John Wesley Jarvis (1780-1840), he became a painter of portraits, miniatures, landscapes, and genre pieces in New York City. He was a founder and vice-president of the National Academy of Design, a director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and a partner with Col. Cephas Grier Childs (1793-1871) in a lithographic business. Childs was a Philadelphia, Pa., engraver, editor, publisher, and pioneer commercial lithographer. During his career, Inman painted the portraits of many prominent people in the United States and England.
