Henry Charles Carey was a Pennsylvania publisher and author, best known for his commentaries on political economy. Born in Philadelphia, Carey was largely educated by his Irish immigrant father, publisher Mathew Carey, and gradually joined the family publishing firm. He amassed a considerable fortune and retired in 1835, and began publishing works on political economy, gradually becoming one of the most influential supporters of protectionism, as opposed to free trade. He also understood the connection between politics and economics, culminating in his last great work, Principles of Social Science. Carey had some significant political connections, and was an economic advisor to President Abraham Lincoln.
