Ottensassen, Burgermeister of Hersfeld, was held in bonds along with Heinrich Reiz in Spangenberg after the capture of Hersfeld. They were released but not allowed to return to Hersfeld.

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany in 1483. After receiving an A.B. and an M.A. from the University of Erfurt in 1505, Luther enrolled in, then left, the Law School at Erfurt. He became an Augustinian friar and was ordained a priest in 1507. Luther served as a lecturer at Wittenberg University in 1508. He traveled to Rome in 1510-11 where he was distressed by the condition of the Catholic Church. Luther served as a professor of Biblical exegesis at Wittenberg from 1511-46. On 31 October 1517 Martin Luther nailed to the church door at Wittenberg his 95 theses in which he questioned the significance of indulgences and condemned the way they were sold. In 1518 he defended his position before the Augustinians and before the Papal Legate Cajetan.
On 1521 January 3 Rome issued the Bull of excommunication Decet. Considerable pressure was brought on Charles V to condemn Luther by civil authority as well. Charles summoned Luther to the meeting of the Imperial Diet at Worms in 1521. The Emperor was unable to secure support from the gathered German princes for Luther's condemnation so the Diet was dismmissed. Luther was later declared a heretic and an outlaw to be killed on sight.
