William H. Campbell served with the South Carolina Palmetto Light Artillery during the United States Civil War. He entered the war as a Captain and was promoted to Major during the war. He served as the Post Commander at Leagres Point on James Island in South Carolina to help protect the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina.
