Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; fought in the war against the Creek Indians; studied law and began a legal career in 1840; United States Congressman from Mississippi 1847-1851; Mississippi legislator 1876-1878 and 1880-1882; brigadier general in Loring's Division during the Civil War; judge of the second judicial circuit in Mississippi; member of the judiciary committee at the 1890 Constitutional Convention; died at Holly Springs, Mississippi.
