Hide Profile

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors. The exhibition spread across 450 acres of ground in Fairmont Park and consisted of over 200 buildings. Planning for the event began in 1870, and in 1871, Congress established the United States Centennial Commission to plan and run the exhibition. The following year saw the incorporation of the Centennial Board of Finance. It was established that the exhibition would feature manufacturing, agricultural, and cultural arts from around the world. More importantly, it was to serve as a showcase of America's resources and inventiveness, as well as the technological advancements achieved in its short history.

The Centennial International Exhibition was held in Philadelphia, Pa. from May 10 to Nov. 10, 1876. Planning began in 1871 when Congress passed an act to create the Centennial Commission. A portion of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia was used as the fair grounds. A German immigrant, Herman J. Schwarzmann, was chosen to design the layout of the exhibition. By early 1875 construction was underway on the large buildings and some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures. The major buildings were Memorial Hall, Machinery Hall, the Main Building, Horticultural Hall, and Agricultural Hall. Everything displayed at the Centennial was classified into one of eight departments: Mining and Metallurgy, Manufactures, Education, Science, Art, Machinery, Agriculture, and Horticulture. These categories were in turn subclassified multiple times into a logical scheme that became the basis for the library classification scheme devised by Melvil Dewey known as the Dewey Decimal System.

Although the Centennial lost money, it provided ample evidence of American progress in education, industry, and the arts that would have a lasting impact on foreign trade.
