Prince Clemens von Metternich was born in 1773 in Koblenz, Germany. The son of a count of the Holy Roman Empire and a countess of Austria, Metternich became an influential Austrian politician and diplomat. His legacy is two-fold. He was seen by many of his contemporaries as a foe of freedom, but has come to be recognized in the 20th century as skilled diplomat, who was able to maintain peace throughout Europe during the 19th century.
