He was a professor at General Theological Seminary in New York City for three years (1821-1824) but spent most of his life in politics and government. At the local level, he served as governor of the city hospital (1823-1865), regent (1826-1870) and vice chancellor (1858-1870) of the State university, and president of the board of commissioners of immigration (1846-1870), and was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1867 and 1868.
