Charles McLean Andrews was born on February 22, 1863 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Trinity College (A.B., 1884) and received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1889. Andrews taught history at Bryn Mawr College (1889-1907), Johns Hopkins University (1907-1910), and at Yale University (1910-1931, professor emeritus, 1933-1943), where he also served as director of historical publications (1931-1933). He published extensively in the field of American colonial history. His guides to sources in British archives are considered to be a major contribution to the historiography of early America and his book, Colonial Period of American History: The Settlements, won him a Pulitzer Prize in 1935. Andrews was a prominent figure in the American Historical Association and other professional organizations. He died in New Haven, Connecticut, on September 9, 1943.

Charles McLean Andrews was born on February 22, 1863 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Trinity College (A.B., 1884) and received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1889. Andrews taught history at Bryn Mawr College (1889-1907), Johns Hopkins University (1907-1910), and at Yale University (1910-1931, professor emeritus, 1933-1943), where he also served as director of historical publications (1931-1933). Evangeline Walker Andrews was born in London, England, in 1869. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1893 and married Charles McLean Andrews in 1895. They had two children, Ethel Andrews Harlan and John Williams Andrews. Evangeline Walker Andrews was active in Bryn Mawr alumnae, dramatic, and fund-raising activities. She co-edited two historical works with her husband and authored a title in the Chronicle of America photoplay series. From 1917 to 1922 she was associate principal, treasurer, and then head of the Ethel Walker School. She was also president of the Connecticut Society of Colonial Dames of America and active in other groups concerned with historic preservation. Andrews died in 1962.
