  • 1922: Graduated, Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass. Studied at Oxford University, Oxford, England
  • 1926: Went to Vienna, Austria, hoping to be psychoanalyzed by Sigmund Freud Married Julian Gardiner (divorced several years later)
  • 1932: Enrolled in University of Vienna Medical School, Vienna, Austria, to train as a psychoanalyst
  • 1934 - 1935 : Joined the political underground in Austria and German under the code name "Mary"
  • 1938: Fled Vienna, Austria, for Paris, France Married Joseph Buttinger
  • 1940: Returned to the United States
