Philip G. Reed (1908-1989) was a printer, typographer, book designer, and skilled wood engraver. Reed grew up in Park Ridge, where his father ran a printing shop in the family home. As a student at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago he developed innovative wood engraving techniques which used individual wood blocks to produce color prints. Reed served as an artist technician in the Army Corps of Engineers and started The Printing Office of Philip Reed after the war. His shop designed and illustrated several books including "The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor." Reed later moved to St. Joseph, Michigan, where he became art director of Consulting Engineer magazine until his retirement in 1976. Reed designed over 40 books and his work won awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was displayed at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph and at libraries across the country.
