Marcel Schein, born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, was educated at the University of Vienna, the University of Wurzburg, and the University of Zurich, where he received his Ph.D. magna cum laude. After teaching in several European universities, he emigrated to the United States in 1938. In that year, he was appointed a research associate in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. In 1946, he was appointed professor of physics and a member of the staff of the Institute for Nuclear Studies, until his death in 1960. His major field of research was in the investigation of cosmic rays.
