Fils d’un médecin de Brive-la-Gaillarde, Guillaume Dubois (1656-1723) fut précepteur de Philippe d’Orléans, alors duc de Chartres, qui, devenu régent, l’appela au pouvoir. Il conclut avec l’Angleterre et la Hollande la Triple puis la Quadruple Alliance contre l’Espagne (1717). Ministre des Affaires étrangères, il fit échouer la conspiration de Cellamare (1718) et obtint du roi d’Espagne la disgrâce d’Alberoni. Après l’archevêché de Cambrai et le chapeau de cardinal, il obtint le titre de Premier ministre. Il entra à l’Académie française et se fit nommer président de l’Assemblée du clergé.
